Our featured volunteer for the month of September is Irish Kuntz Central Kitchen, Friendly Chat and Face Mask Connoisseur!
Q: What made you interested in volunteering with Meals on Wheels People?
A: After retiring from a regular paying job, I wanted to do some volunteer work. I thought about the different organizations but pulled from my own personal experience. Before my parents had to leave their home to go to assisted living/foster care, my sisters and I wanted to ensure they would be eating healthy meals. We would get together about once a month and cook a main dish and a vegetable, seal it, label it, and put these meals in their freezer. All they had to do was microwave them for a nutritious meal. That brought me to Meals on Wheels as I would see the lime green trucks that said No Senior Goes Hungry. I volunteered in Central Kitchen where I was doing just about the same thing my sisters and I had done for our parents. I had to step back from Central Kitchen after tearing the meniscus in my knee. Then in March 2020, I saw the request for Face Masks. I started making them to donate to MOWP every week (and to friends, neighbors and family). To date, I am nearing the 800+ mark for these FMs. I plan on doing this until FMs are no longer required. I also volunteer for the Friendly Chat program MOWP started in April.I have talked to some pretty interesting people in this program! I am so pleased I can continue volunteering for MOWP while still doing the Stay Home suggestion.
Q: What do you enjoy most about your volunteer experience?
A: It gives me such a feeling of fulfilment and satisfaction to be able to help others. As this pandemic drones on, I think it’s important to stay positive. This is one of the ways to accomplish this and to impart this feeling to others.
Q: What inspires you?
A: The FRONT-LINERS! The people I know that are the front-liners and the stories I hear from them. They are the real heroes!
Q: What do you like to do when you’re not volunteering?
A: I love baseball so am watching my favorite team on TV, the LA Dodgers. Also hoping the Blazers can make it past the Lakers in round one of the playoffs. Due to COVID19, not able to do the following but I love the Broadway plays, going to the movies, playing poker with friends, and going to quilt shows. I do enjoy cooking so have tried new recipes from FoodNetwork.com since not being able to go out and eat with friends like before.
Q: What is your favorite summer activity?
A: Anything, EXCEPT yardwork!
Thank you, Irish, for caring about older adults in our community and helping us change lives, one meal at a time!
