Name: Barbara Stavig-Doane
Location: Friendly Chat and Multilingual Wellness Check Calls
Q: What made you interested in volunteering with Meals on Wheels People?
A: A friend asked me if I would be interested in calling Meals on Wheels recipients on Thanksgiving Day. It was such a rewarding experience, I signed up to be a friendly chat volunteer on a regular basis. Now I also make wellness check calls in Spanish.
Q: What do you enjoy most about your volunteer experience?
A: I enjoy meeting new people, and hope that I am able to bring a little sunshine into their lives. I learn something interesting from each person that I call.
Q: What inspires you?
A: I am inspired by the kindness of strangers. My wonderful friends and family also inspire me to try to be a better person every day. Mr. Rogers, John Lewis and RBG have inspired me to treat people with respect and dignity.
Q: What do you like to do when you’re not volunteering?
A: I love getting outside for walks, listening to music, collecting folk art, cooking, and spending time with family and friends. I also love to travel, but that has been rather limited recently!
Q: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
A: I can’t think of a better place to live than in Oregon, especially Portland! But if I could spend a few months in Oaxaca, Mexico or Costa Rica every year, I would jump at the chance to do that!
Thank you, Barb, for helping us change lives, one meal at a time!
