Volunteer of the Month: Elke Lewis | Meals on Wheels People

Volunteer of the Month: Elke Lewis

Name: Elke Lewis
Center: Downtown Portland (Elm Court)
Volunteer Hours: 655

Q: What made you interested in volunteering with Meals on Wheels People?
A: I had been involved in many volunteer organizations before moving to Portland so, on Thanksgiving Day in 1996 my family & I delivered holiday meals. Then the organizer asked if I wanted to drive during the year as well, I said “Yes” and from then on it just seemed the right fit. I was a driver every weekend until 2014 when I stopped for a few years. When the pandemic started it seemed like a good time to get back into volunteering. Now I do three days a week at the downtown center and also make “Friendly Chat” calls. It just feels good to be back with the MOWP family.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your volunteer experience?
A: Having the interaction with the clients who are always so appreciative, and with other volunteers who are so committed to the community. Over the years there have been some great MOWP people I have met and now I would miss not being part of the volunteer family.

Q: What inspires you?
A: Seeing a need in the MOWP community and the many “Thanks You’s” one gets. And knowing that we make a difference. It feels good to be useful & needed.

Q: What do you like to do when you’re not volunteering?
A: II like to keep up with my water aerobics/exercise and also walk our dog Teddie (mini schnauzer) twice daily. I enjoy traveling and have seen much of the world. Also we always make time to see the grandkids, and of course time for reading with my book group.

Q: Who has influenced you the most?
A: My family, especially my mom.
