When Lunch Becomes Love: Joseph & Vicki’s Story

An older couple sits closely on a bench, holding hands and smiling warmly at each other. They are dressed in colorful outfits, conveying love and joy.

Joseph and Vicki met over lunch at our Martin Luther King Jr. Dining Center. What started as a simple meal turned into friendship — and eventually, love.

Their story is sweet. But it’s also important.

Because what Joseph and Vicki found at our dining center wasn’t just a meal — it was belonging.

Every week, older adults across the Portland-Vancouver metro areas come to our 15 dining centers for nutritious food. But what keeps them coming back is the connection — a welcoming space where loneliness doesn’t stand a chance.

For Joseph and Vicki, that meant shared walks, songs, and laughter. Recently, it meant saying “I do.”

Watch them sing their favorite song, “Blue Skies.”
